Today we celebrate the Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere and the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern. A solar equinox is when the Sun appears directly above the equator, or more precisely, when the plane of the Earth’s equator passes through the geometric centre of the Sun’s disk. The Earth’s rotation axis is directly perpendicular to the Sun-Earth line, tilting neither toward nor away from the Sun. The word ‘equinox’ is derived from the Latin words ‘aequus’ (equal) and ‘nox’ (night). From the Earth, the Sun appears to rise ‘due east’ and set ‘due west’, and day and night are of approximately equal length.
September 23rd also coincides with the Sun transiting into the sign of Libra, represented by the symbol of the scales. The ‘Scales of Justice’ held by Themis, the Greek personification of divine law and custom. I view equinox as the Scales of Justice perfectly balanced at equilibrium, not leaning more to the left or the right, but stationary and centred for one short moment. Everything standing in a neutral position, much like the pause between an inhale and an exhale.
This reminds me of Dr John Demartini’s teachings, that everything we can possibly perceive is essentially neutral. Much like a magnet with two polar opposites, everything holds two sides equally, resulting in neutrality. Day and night. Light and dark. Yin and Yang. We as humans, are no different. “No-one is nice without mean, kind without cruel, or positive without negative all the time.” As we move through life, it is our perceptions, interpretations, expectations, and decisions that determine if something is positive or negative, good or bad, right or wrong. These beliefs are often taught to us at an early age by our parents, teachers, authoritative figures, and through our traditions. What we need to be aware of, is that perceiving anything as one-sided, or having a “subjectively biased interpretation of reality” causes an imbalance, and more often than not, results in human suffering.
When you find yourself only seeing the negative side of something or someone, work at bringing your perception back into balance again. Identify the positives, the upsides, the blessings and benefits it or they bring. Identify the drawbacks that may have occurred, if it or they weren’t present or had never appeared in your life in this way. As a result, we get to view the opportunities we couldn’t see before. We begin to transform what we originally perceived to be a negative event, person or thing into something or someone we can be grateful for. Through this experience we allow ourselves to grow, we return to a state of equilibrium, and our suffering is given an opportunity to dissolve.
So how can we celebrate equinox? The best way, involves interacting with Mother Nature and your natural environment. Get outside and observe how magnificently she is changing!
Although the movement of the seasons is a never-ending cycle, Spring is often seen as the first season of the four. Spring Equinox indicates that from this moment, the days are getting longer than the nights, as the Sun remains in the sky for a few minutes more every day. Spring is associated with new beginnings, new growth, sowing seeds, watching them sprout, leaves uncurling, buds opening, and flowers showing off their brilliant colours. It can be likened to the dawn of the day! As new light emerges, life begins to glow with wonderful possibilities and opportunities patiently waiting to be realised.
We also talk about ‘Spring’ cleaning! A wonderful opportunity to make our areas feel fresh and new and uncluttered again. A time to let go of the old, release what we no longer use or have stored for too long, clean it out and make room for the new, in all areas of our lives. The stillness of an equinox gives us the chance to stop for just a moment, to clear our minds, to gain some clarity about what we wish to manifest next into our lives, and the first steps we need to make.
Take off your shoes and connect with Mother Earth, her ground, her soil. Feel the potential that vibrates deep at her core for you. Soak up her energy and use it to nourish your life force, to make you stronger, sharper, and more resilient than before. Just like a seed, you can awaken, unravel, and begin to focus on the new dawn, the beautiful light in front of you. A wonderful future is waiting for you to create whatever you desire. What brings you the most joy? What aspirations do you hold? What would you love to learn, pursue, create, or experience before the year comes to a close? Make some plans now.
Naturopathic principles hold the value of Tolle Causam. It means, identifying and addressing the underlying cause of dis-ease or dis-harmony by removing any disturbing or sustaining factors that are causing us harm. As this new light shines on what we are paying attention to, assess whether this thing is serving you or holding you back? Is it moving you towards your goals and aspirations or away from them? Is it making you feel balanced, nourished, and at peace, or irritated, resentful, and angry? Does it benefit your health or is it leading you towards a state of dis-ease that you’ll pay for later?
This is an area I am well-rehearsed and trained to resolve. I can walk you through specific questions to uncover the root cause of your suffering, whether it be emotional or physical, and work with you to find the best ways around your current state or condition. Through gentle education and support, I will guide and empower you to find the ‘Natural Balance’ you’ve been looking for, so you can be the best version of yourself possible.
Sweet Blessed Equinox to you!
In health and wellness,
Monica ♥
